The Law Commission of India (LCI) has invited suggestions from all the religious organizations of the country regarding the Uniform Civil Code within 30 days. Religious organizations or individuals can send suggestions to the official email ID [email protected] issued by the Commission. The LCI may also invite the organization or individual suggesting to discuss the details.
After the Law Commission invited suggestions on the Uniform Civil Code, the debate on it started once again. However, since the independence of India, the demand for Uniform Civil Code or Uniform Civil Code (UCC) has been going on. Under this, there will be a single law that will not care about any religion, gender, or sexual orientation. Even the constitution says that the nation should ‘endeavor’ to provide such laws to its citizens.
What is Uniform Civil Code (UCC)?
Uniform Civil Code is actually based on the idea of one country one law. Under the UCC, the same law is to be applied to all religions and communities of the country. In Uniform Civil Code i.e. Uniform Civil Code, uniform law is to be made for all regarding the acquisition and operation of property, marriage, divorce and adoption, etc.

The Uniform Civil Code originated in colonial India when the British government submitted its report in 1835, which stressed the need for uniformity in the codification of Indian law for crimes, evidence, and contracts. It was also recommended that the personal laws of Hindus and Muslims be kept outside such codification. There is equal law for all citizens in India. Applicable in matters of marriage, divorce, succession, and property.
The general system in India was that criminal matters were governed by the law of the state while civil matters were governed by the personal laws of the various religions. But with time many civil laws were codified. At present, Hindu law has been codified, but in the Muslim community, Parsi community, and Christian community, many rules still operate according to personal law. For this many times, the demand for implementation of the Uniform Civil Code arises.
Why is there a need for a Uniform Civil Code?
According to the Indian Constitution, India is a secular country, in which followers of all religions and sects (such as Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist, etc.) have the right to make laws related to their respective religions. There are two types of personal law in India. The first is the Hindu Marriage Act 1956; applies to Hindu, Sikh, Jain and other sects.
Second, the Muslim Personal Law applicable to those who follow the Muslim religion while the Hindu Marriage Act 1956 made under the provisions of the Indian Constitution is applicable for all other religions and sects except Muslims, then the same law implemented for the Muslim religion as well.

Uniform Civil Code is followed in many countries, they are Pakistan, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Turkey, Indonesia, Sudan, Egypt, America, Ireland, etc. All these countries have uniform laws for all religions and there are no separate laws for any particular religion or community.
Effect on you if Uniform Civil Code is implemented
- If Uniform Civil Code is implemented in the country, then women will be benefited the most. If women get equal rights, their condition will improve.
- Gender discrimination will end with women getting equal rights in matters related to marriage, divorce, succession and guardianship.
- With the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code law, there will be a uniform law and order for all the citizens of the country. This will reduce the risk of discrimination or inconsistencies in the law.
